Become a Member

Membership is free to all George’s Creek watershed residents.  To become a member, you must attend 2 or more GCWA meetings consecutively and thereafter at least 4 meetings per year.

The GCWA is non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.  All donations are tax deductible and very much needed and appreciated!

The GCWA can use your knowledge, skills and energy.  Help us work to resolve the environmental issues in the George’s Creek watershed by donating your time and effort.  You can volunteer once, monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, or annually with:

  • Stream and Road-side Clean-ups
  • Tree and Wetland Plantings
  • Project Maintenance
  • Fundraising
  • Grant writing
  • Newsletter publication
  • Educational lectures and presentations

Georges Creek Watershed Association Mission Statement

BY-LAWS GEORGE’S CREEK WATERSHED ASSOCIATION, INCORPORATED

Mission Statement

The George’s Creek Watershed Association is a cooperative, inclusive organization of residents dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people who live in and visit George’s Creek through being effective stewards of our natural environment.

Article I Name

-The Name of the Organization shall be the George’s Creek Watershed Association, Incorporated.

Article II Objectives

-The Objectives of the Association shall be:

  • A.A. to promote the clean up of the George’s Creek Watershed and it tributaries, hereto in referred to as the Watershed
  • B.B. to reduce acid mine seepage into the watershed
  • C.C. to develop educational programs that will promote greater stewardship of our natural resources
  • D.D. to improve drinking water quality
  • E.E. to reduce flood damage in the Watershed
  • F.F. to monitor and advocate for the reduction of sewage, landfill leachate, and run off into the Watershed
  • G.G. to promote the historical, cultural, and recreational aspects of the Watershed.

Article III Membership

-Membership shall be open to all residents and natives of the Watershed.

-Associate memberships shall be open to individuals with an interest in preserving and protecting the Watershed.

-No dues shall be charged for membership.

-Recruitment of new members shall be the responsibility of existing members.

Article IV Board of Directors

-The Board of Directors shall consist of the Officers of the Association, three (3) members-at-large elected from the membership, and ex-officio members who are business, corporate, and civic leaders and who are residents or natives of the Watershed.

-The Board of Directors shall conduct the affairs of the Association between meetings of the membership.

-The Board of Directors shall meet at least once per year.

-An Interim Board of Directors shall be selected to govern the Association until the first elections are held.

Article V Officers

-The officers of the Association shall be Chair, Assistant Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

-The Chair shall serve as the chief executive officer of the Association and shall preside at all meetings of the membership and the Board of Directors. The Chair shall perform all duties incident to the Office of Chair. -The Assistant Chair shall exercise the duties of the Chair when the Chair is unable to fulfill the requirements of the position. -The Secretary shall keep minutes of the meetings of the membership and of the Board of Directors and shall maintain a mailing list of Association members. The secretary shall in general perform all duties incident to the Office of Secretary.

-The Treasurer shall have charge and custody of and be responsible for all funds and securities of the Association; shall receive and give receipts for funds due to and payable to the Association and shall deposit funds in the Association’s bank account(s). The Treasurer shall in general perform all duties incident to the Office of Treasurer.

-Officers shall be elected during the first meeting held after September 1.

-Officers shall serve two-year terms and may be reelected to consecutive terms.

Article VI Meeting

-Regular meetings shall be scheduled for the third Tuesday of the month.

-The Chair or any other officer shall inform the membership of special meetings at least one week in advance of the meeting date.

-A quorum shall be defined as the membership present at the given meeting.

Article VI Parliamentary Procedures

-The rule contained in the current edition of “Robert’s Rules of Order: Newly Revised” shall govern the Association.

Article VIII Committees

-Committees shall be appointed by the Chair or by resolution of the attending membership.

-Committees shall exist until their function is completed.

Article IX Amendments

-The By-Laws may be amended at any meeting of the Association by a two-thirds majority of those present.

-Amendments are to be submitted to the membership at least one week prior to the next scheduled meeting and shall be read at two scheduled meetings of the membership prior to the vote.
